Download The Preparedness Project-February 2013
Here is a breakdown on our focus topics for the month:
72 hour kit-first aid kit and sanitation kit
Short term storage-oils and salts (salad dressings, butter, salt, peanut butter, oils)
Long term storage-oils and salts (salt, oils and shortening if you rotate, or look into powdered forms-ie. powdered peanut butter, powdered butter, powdered shortening)
Storage Goals:
3 month supply-2 lbs. salt and 2 1/2 quarts oil
One year supply-8 lbs. salt and 10 quarts oil
Aldi and Sam's club had the least expensive pricing on salt. If you purchase from Sam's, all you need is two boxes (4 lbs. each), per person. Salt will last indefinitely if you keep the moisture out. I know 8 lbs. sounds like a lot-you're thinking, "there's no way I'm consuming that much in a year." Most of your sodium intake right now is consumed in processed foods-everything from canned vegetables, lunch meats, etc. If you had to live on the basic foods, you would need this amount of salt. And it's only going to cost you LESS THAN $2 per person. So stock up!!
Fats are a little trickier in that they don't have a great shelf life. However, if you're stocking what you use, you shouldn't have a problem rotating it before it goes bad. Most vegetable oils have a shelf life of at least 1-2 years. Shortening is about 2 years (1 year once opened).
